Hi, I’m Liz Wallenstein. I’m a licensed mental health counselor in private practice, with offices in Brooklyn and Manhattan, NYC. My graduate degree is in psychological counseling from Columbia University. I attend post-graduate training, receive clinical supervision, and am always working to increase my knowledge and skill base to ensure my clients get the best possible care I can give.
It’s a privilege that people invite me along on their life’s journey. I love helping them to embrace their lives, make meaning of their experiences, and fall in love with who they uniquely are. My goal as a therapist is that people should find peace and joy in their day-to-day lives, no matter what their circumstances.
What inspired me to become a therapist is the ability therapy has to transform lives. Therapy can turn the biggest challenges into the biggest opportunities. Instead of just having to go through something or deal with it, therapy turns it into a learning experience that can change the rest of your life for the better.
My approach to therapy is a blend of healing exploration with practical guidance. I treat symptoms such as worry, sadness, ‘stuckness’, conflict, despair, and chronic physical pain as the psyche’s way of trying to communicate something. Like machine parts that jam causing the machine to stop functioning properly, these symptoms are a sign of a jam in your mental and emotional processes. I guide my clients in bringing subconscious thoughts and feelings into awareness, so they may be addressed, freeing the person to move forward and feel happier.
I am definitely not an “uh-huh” therapist… I don’t just listen and reflect back. I ask questions and share insights and observations as we go along. I always check-in with clients to see if what I’m doing is helpful and I encourage them to share their reactions and questions as part of the therapy.
I focus on individual counseling in my practice, because my work and research has shown me that how a person feels, how their life is going and how their relationships are, depends most on their relationship with themselves. The better a person feels on the inside, the more they see the rest of their life fall into place.
It takes a really strong person to be able to look at their life and say ‘something isn’t working here and I want to fix it’. Not everybody can do that and I respect it. I find it inspiring and exciting to work with that everyday.
